Dr. Amy L. Stone is Professor of Sociology at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Stone’s research interests include U.S. LGBTQ+ culture, community and politics with an emphasis on the South and Southwest. They are an award-winning author and teacher. Dr. Stone has coauthored scientific briefs on LGBTQ rights for the Supreme Court, given testimony in the Texas state legislature, published well-read community reports on LGBTQ health in Texas, and published influential research in academic journals to shape public and social policy. The author of five academic books, Dr. Stone’s work includes an award-winning book for a general readership, Cornyation: San Antonio’s Outrageous Fiesta Tradition, for which they were voted Best Local Author by the San Antonio Current.

They are currently writing a co-authored book with Dr. Brandon Andrew Robinson on how to prevent LGTBQ youth homelessness, based on their work on the Family, Housing, and Me (FHAM) Project, a $1 million project funded by the National Science Foundation. Their last major books, Queer Carnival: Festivals & Mardi Gras in the South (NYU Press, 2022) and Cornyation: San Antonio’s Outrageous Fiesta Tradition (TU Press, 2017) received widespread media coverage on LGBTQ festival life in the South and Southwest. They also authored Gay Rights at the Ballot Box (UMinn Press, 2012) on the anti-LGBTQ ballot measures happening across the country. They are the co-editor of Out of the Closet, Into the Archives: Researching Sexual Histories (SUNY Press, 2015) and Outskirts: Queer Experiences on the Fringe (NYU Press, 2025). Out of the Closet, Into the Archives was a finalist for the prestigious Lambda Literary Award.
